View Full Version : Drugs may be on sale in Straw Market
While local straw vendors are often criticized for selling knock-off bags, a recent bust revealed that vendors at the world-famous Straw Market are selling Cuban cigars and even drugs.
The revelation was made by Minister of Works and Transport Earl Deveaux, but he refused to elaborate on what kinds of drugs were seized and how much was found.

Last time I walked through the straw market, in april, I was offered drugs 3 times.....once by a rasta and twice by two female straw vendors.
I reported it to a police officer walking down Baystreet, he looked at me like I was on drugs and kept walking.
I was with my college room mate and we were counting how many times we got offered drugs that day
5 times on Baystreet
3 times in Straw Market
2 times at Arawak fish fry
but Cabbage beach took the cake, 9 times in a space of 2 or 3 hours.....
It's a shame the government and the police allow drug dealers to thrive inside the 'world famous' straw market.
I wonder how much they will benefit from a new straw market?

I guess you should ask Immigration to run a similar investigation.
But seriously this is the Nassau that is suppposed to refect the entire nation, and we let these parisites run around like this? Man if that is supposed to represtne me then I want succession. Police need to start asking questions to some of these people who stand around aimlessly on the sidewalks all day cussing while they busy trying to tow the cars of carrer people! If they cry social/ racial profiling.....well frig them! We wll know what the hell in 'dem pockets! You think we are stupid aye!? :realmad:
Sunnyjohn 07-17-07, - 11:04 AM A Police force undercover sting of the area with arrests and high fines for "alleged" dealers would be a great start.
No reason why if we know the dealers are on the dock and on Bay Street that we can't catch them all in a dragnet.

MAY?
MAY?
MAY?
Drugs have ALWAYS BEEN in the Straw Market. How is this a new revelation?
I'd love to walk through the Straw Market with a police drug sniffing dog one time. My guess is that the entire Straw Market could be moved to Fox Hill pretty quick.
Shakita 07-17-07, - 11:13 AM Same happens in Port Lucaya. I saw a young kids buying drugs one time. How can it be the authorities don't?
chancellor 07-17-07, - 11:18 AM It's like the police are here to protect toursist....which is ironic since the drug are in the straw market. I wonder what will happen when the tourists leave because they forgot to look after the people who actually live here and pay their salaries. I guess they will disband?
I really don't know why. I mean in a counrty where everyone knows everyone, and where people have yet to learn how to place fairness and rule of law above family/group loyalty. It is pointless hiring a man to enforce law over his brother or brother-in law etc.
Tracey C 07-17-07, - 11:32 AM Hi everyone...as you can see i'm new and am excited about being a part of this community.
I also wanted to state my disgust at these findings if what is reported is true. Unless we adopt an overall zero tolerance approach to crime, this and other societal ills [45 murders and counting] will continue to plague us. It has gotten so bad that not only am I afraid to go out at night, I'm becoming reluctant to go out in the day as well.
Something needs to be done!
Alien 07-17-07, - 11:34 AM There are, unfortunately, drug dealers down town; it has nothing to do with the straw market.

Lock um up damit..frig who they is, who they mother is, who they renting a stall from, and who they sleeping wit.
We just need to do some undercover operations for one week...one week. Bring in some police officers from the states and set up a sting operation. We cant use our police dem...erry one know who dey is. All kinda new technology exist..we could get them on camera, on tape and erryting.....One week man. And charge everyone who get catch......put pressure on them...one week!
BahamaWave 07-17-07, - 01:26 PM hey Lynette...what happens to the drugs that are confiscated by the police? I put it to you that they still make it to the streets thru corrupt police officers who pass these drugs on to their drug dealing commrades for a cut of the profits.

Do you think the political will truly exists for the type of operation you mentioned to be carried out? Clearly, it is not for a lack of ideas, resources or manpower.... it therefore makes one wonder why there is the reluctance to act [sigh]. Nevertheless I guess until a celebrity buys some bad drugs and dies from it we won't do anything to stem the tide.

Ummmm plausible
Well what suppose to happen is that the 'evidence' is secured in the 'drug house' and is guraded by the Strike Force. When the trial is complete then the evidence is destroyed.
That being said.....
I know the strike force and DEU boys dem is take they job dead serious and it is HIGHLY UNLIKEY that drugs go missing from the drug house. Man they is wan shoot me if I get to close to the building. I cant even tell you how it look on the inside.
Now that dont mean that the arresting officer or another officer dont have access or will not move some before the DEU people take the substance into their custody and care.
