I just got back from the Gas Station. I paid $3.53 a gallon for gas. (Did I read it right???)

How high do you think the prices will go?

Are these high prices hurting your business yet?

this is one of the reasons i am REALLY looking into buying one of those gas/electric hybrid cars from toyota (when i start working after friday :)) i dont really think that the rise in gas prices will hurt businesses that much because the cost will be filtered down to the consumer.

Good idea! What about Solar powered cars? Do you know anything about them?

True, the cost is passed on to us, but in time it will cause us to buy less.

Absolutely Ridiculous!!!!

Diesel Ran Cars Are Sounding More And More Better For Me. I Am About To Park My Car And Start Walking.

Something Needs To Be Done About This. At One Time $10.00 Could Have Put My Tank On 1/2 Full Now , Just About 1/4.

when i bought my jeep in 2001, i could fill it with $55 approx. Now, havent filled it since last year, so dont know, except, I spend a mimimum of $10 a day, max of $20, its a V6 4.0 so its not cheap either way, but with the price of gas now im glad I dont do as much driving now as I used to when i used to do all day driving servicing alarms in the japenese car i had!

Diesel is really not an alternative, most diesel vehicles in Nassau are imported from Japan, most are old and spit out black smoke. Another problem is the amount of japanese cars that are being imported and sold in Nassau, gas and diesel, with so many families having as much as 7 cars each. This import of japanese cars, being that they are cheap, could be good on the pocket, but bad for the economy on a whole, not to mention enviromental issues, even though it is not as bad as the blue smoke from our local gas cars, most of which should also not be on the road killing us day by day.

If there were regulations on the smoke coming from these vehicles, then it would be a better route, but I dont see that ever happening in Nassau. They buy the cars for around $2000 some of them, so they arent going to spend any money to fix the smoke issue.

You just can't win can you?

what is there for us as consumers to do? Is there no hope for help?

For whom shall we look for help?

Take a look at Propane as a motor fuel. Canada has thousands of vehicles that run on Propane gas, which is clean burning and does NOT increase pollution at all. Can you think of any reason why this would not work in the Bahamas?

.... Can you think of any reason why this would not work in the Bahamas?.

I can think of a number of reasons: We are slow to embrace change, particular good change! We seem to elect governments with little or no creative thinking. Government collects $1.00+ on each gallon of gas sold. The list goes on but I think the time will come when we (the world) will have to embrace change, be we will be among the last to do so - more is the pity!

CG:

It would cost nothing, if the Government simply eliminated the import duty on Propane powered vehicles, which are clean and green. This would have two effects..........It would encourage buyers to choose enviro-friendly cars and trucks, due to no import tax, and the air would be happier, too. The Government could also show some leadership, by buying Propane cars and trucks for it's own use. How many vehicles does the Bahamas Government own? I'll bet it is in the hundreds, at least.

On another related topic, what is being done about the dump/ smoke problem?

Something like that would not be tolerated here in Toronto.

BTW, the Toronto Star newspaper has a front page column, every day called THE FIXER. This is a reporter whose ONLY job is to take calls of complaint from citizens about city problems, such as a broken traffic light signal, or a drinking fountain that doesn't work or a road that needs to be repaired.

The reporter takes the report and goes about finding out exactly which city department is rsponsible, and calls the department manager, to report the problem. He then does a field report on the problem and how long it takes to get it fixed. The avearge time to get it fixed is ONE DAY. Remember that this is the largest newspaper in Canada, with over 300,000 subscribers in Toronto, alone. The power of the press, used to keep our city running properly. Could this work in Nassau? You betcha, it could. Being embarassed by the daily papers is a great way to get the pols to act as they are suppossed to.

Pass this idea to the media down there, it works, but they have to keep at it, every day, not just once in a while.

You are forgetting, you are talking about making sense with the Bahamas Government, those who just made VOIP an illegal offence with a $300,000 fine!

hybrids are coming out in the form of SUVs, in 2005. They claim as much power as (or more than) their gas counterparts, according to CNN. They wont be cheap though, like in the US $30-40K range.
