Levying claims of victimization and intimidation against management at Taino Beach Resort and Club yesterday, Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU) executives stood with the housekeeping staff as they gathered at the front of the resort property.

About a dozen employees from the Housekeeping Department held a united front in the fight for better working conditions, better pay, and most of all, the security of their jobs late Tuesday morning.

The move came hot on the heels of a meeting earlier that morning when, the women say, they were informed that another management team was going to be in charge of their department.

Taino Beach Resort housekeeping staff get union support in their demand for better working conditions and pay

....Bridget Munroe who has been employed at the resort for eight years said she has been paid the same salary and she does not think it is fair that they do not have the necessary tools – like a cart or trolley – to perform their job.
In fact, room attendants have to tote their mop and broom, bucket of water and the tray with their cleaning utensils daily back and forth from the housekeeping area to each room, she revealed.
And, she adds that housekeeping is the only department that is not supplied with water.
Elizabeth Hopkins says the work is making the women sick and management is doing nothing about it.
"They are always complaining that every other week a maid is getting sick. We have to get sick up here for how we work when we tote everything from one end to the next," she said.
