Chicago Judge Sets Sept. 17 Trial Date for R. Kelly on Child Pornography Charges

R. Kelly will go on trial next month, more than five years after he was charged with child pornography.

Judge Vincent Gaughan has set a Sept. 17 date for the start of a jury trial, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site that setting of the date followed a lengthy meeting Wednesday among the judge, the lead prosecutor, the R&B singer and his lawyers.

Kelly, who was born Robert Sylvester Kelly, has pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of child pornography. He was charged in 2002 and is accused of allegedly engaging in videotaped sex acts with an underage girl.

Kelly's attorneys haven't conceded that he is on the tape, saying his likeness may have been computer generated. They have also tried to raise doubts about the identity and age of the girl.

The case has been hit with delay after delay. Since being charged, Kelly has had six best-selling albums and three nationwide tours.

The 40-year-old singer has said he'll survive his legal tribulations.

"I'm going through my own struggle ... and you're either gonna fold or you're going to stand," Kelly told The Associated Press in 2005, "and I believe in standing."


Now, Michael Jackson has never been found guilty of the charges brought against him. But he was destroyed because of them. Admittedly, Michael has issues. But its interesting that people can admit Michael has issues but still love the man. However, with R Kelly, its sheer stupidity. He is guilty of statutory rape - because everyone knows he was with Aaliyah when she was 14 or 15 years old and he was 30. Now its all on video. But he's still out there making stupid music. What is wrong here?? How do grown folks enjoy listening to R Kelly's foolishness?? I went out with this lady once, and things happened and we ended up back at her place. She stood up to go and set the mood and she turned on R Kelly's "Feeling on Yo' Booty" song. Mind you, this is a 30 year old woman!!!! I couldn't even get hard that night. So I left and burnt her phone number.

I aint saying Michael don't have problems. But the facts don't come close to this R Kelly thing. You can't or couldn't convict Michael Jackson on the evidence provided. But R Kelly's situation is plain as day.

Remember when people used to complain about police brutality?? Everyone knew it was going on but the evidence provided wasn't strong enough to get a conviction or prompt action against the guilty parties or departments. Then when the Rodney King video tape came the evidence was too overwhelming to ignore or charge off as insufficient - even though they did do just that. But that's the same thing with R Kelly. You have this stuff *ON VIDEO*!!!!!!!

in cases where there is evidence such as video which proves beyond a resonable doubt i dont see why it needs to go to trial. just have a judge convict and call it a day.

Now in another realm, his sexual prefrence and practices do class him as a phedophile and rapist.
