Steve Wynn just opened a HUGE casino/resort in Macau.

The Sands-Macau is the largest casino-resort in the world

The Venetian, MGM Grand, Mandarin and Grand Hyatt are all in operation. Ricahrd Branson plans to break ground on a resort later this year.

Macau's casino's make more in revenue than the casino's on the LAS VEGAS strip.

Macau is also a huge offshore financial center.

Take a gander at a few sites.

From 9.1 million visitors in 2000, arrivals to Macau has grown to 18.7 million visitors in 2005, 21.98 million visitors in 2006 and is expected to receive between 24 and 25 million visitors in 2007,[32] with over 50% of the arrivals coming from mainland China. This recent growth has been driven by gambling and related tourism. Tourists from Hong Kong remain numerous, representing about 30% of arrivals.

Since the 1999 return to Chinese rule, Triad underworld violence, a dark spot on the economy, has virtually disappeared, to the benefit of the tourism sector.

Macau also received the Future Award 2007, for being regarded the most promising future tourism destination in Asia, voted by 26,000 German travel trade members of GoAsia; an association that includes tour operators, airline companies, among many others. Macau has been currently rated as one of the world's top tourism destinations by the World Tourism Organization.

Along with Bermuda, British Virgin Islands or Bahamas, Macau is one of the best known offshore financial centres and tax havens in a worldwide sense. Banco Nacional Ultramarino, Bank of China, Seng Heng Bank and Tai Fung Bank are among the most influential banks.

There are also many foreign banks registered and established in Macau as well, including Bank of America - Macau and HSBC - Macau. Macau is a free port with low-taxes and no monetary control policy imposed. Operations of offshore service businesses are feasible in Macau because of related offshore law that has been in effect since 1999.

You may ask, "Sunny, why do you keep posting this stuff? We don't care 'bout no foreigners on da other side of da ocean! I only concerned with my high light bill."

Well, we should be concerned. Folks we are NO LONGER ALONE in the tourism market. There are folks out their who are doing what we are doing and doing it BETTER.

It's time for us to pull up our socks. We must increase or service levels. Customer service is not akin the servitude. If you are going to charge what we do for our product WE MUST give full bang for that buck.

... and it's time to DIVERSIFY OUR ECONOMY!

Tourism will never go away, but the other roots on our economic tree must be developed.

Financial services/banking need to make a comeback. Sustainable agriculture/fisheries and Ecological energy production/sales need to be looked at. Developments in tech need to be pursued.

All our eggs + one basket = CRAZY!

I usually call my mother every week, just to make sure everything's okay - and like always, like most bahamians, she was only concerned about one thing - her pocketbook. But when I called her a few months back and warned her that in a few months if she didn't fix her finances that she'll be crying about her pocketbook. I'm out of breath. Glad to see that Sunny is still....well...Sunny, because I'm not. Its only so many times you can tell people something before you realize they will never listen until they're drowning and its too late to save them.

Yes, but das beside da point! LOL! :D

I am talkin' about how they are going to be the Next Vegas and take a large % of tourist away from the Bahamas.

Macau already has the world's LARGEST casino and makes more money a year than Vegas.

I dont see how it will take any tourist away from here, its located on the next side of the globe. If anything it will see mostly Australian tourists, and those from other Asian countries.
