I just caught the last bit of CABLE 12 News about a race for the Class "C" boats at the Acklins Regatta being name in honour of Anna Nicole, by King Eric Gibson. It seem like there was row and problems brewing!!

Anybody know exactly what happened??????

You didn't see the piece in the paper about how King Eric renovated the Lucayan Lady and renamed it "Anna Nicole Smith"? Man he used Lucayan Lady!

I don't think they care, and not to start up the dreadful topic of ANS again, but I don't know what she did to them so.

A King-sized blunder

During the height of their popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, King Eric and His Knights were one of the most renowned group of entertainers in the country. Their success was primarily due to the entrepreneurial skills of their leader, Eric Gibson, a born promoter who invested considerable time and energy in marketing the group.

The band's popularity, however, waned over the years and essentially it has all but disappeared, but King Eric has remained very much in the spotlight as one of the principal promoters of Family Island regattas.

Over the recent Emancipation Day holiday weekend, Gibson sought to do what he has done so well for most of his life: provide a good vehicle for promoting the Acklins regatta by prominently associating it with the name of the late Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith, with whom his entire family apparently developed a close relationship prior to her tragic death in February.

Gibson's involvement with the regatta was as chairman of the Acklins Regatta and Homecoming Committee and as a consultant for the Government on regattas. Published reports indicated that the regatta was given a "pink theme," in recognition of pink being Anna Nicole Smith's favorite color.

What's more, Gibson reportedly arranged for a special Anna Nicole Smith race to be a part of the regatta, despite a report that Anita Collie-Pratt, president of the Acklins Trade and Development Association, who appointed Gibson chairman of the Regatta Committee, had instructed him that there would be "no Anna Nicole race in Acklins." For ignoring Collie-Pratt's instructions, Gibson was dismissed as chairman of the Acklins Regatta Homecoming Committee "for embarrassing the committee and the people of Acklins by turning their recent regatta into an Anna Nicole spectacle."

The decision by Collie-Pratt to dismiss Gibson should be applauded. Using Anna Nicole Smith's name to promote the Acklins regatta was not only an embarrassment to the people of Acklins, but to the people of the entire Bahamas. When King Eric's son, Shane Gibson, who was the then Minister of Immigration in the former Progressive Liberal Party Government, fast-tracked the Anna Nicole Smith's application for permanent residency in late 2006, The Bahamas was catapulted into a vortex of negative publicity, which included photographs published in The Tribune on February 11, 2007 — and subsequently around the world — showing Smith lying clothed in bed in an embrace with Shane Gibson.

What has to be kept in mind here is that it has been almost one year since Anna Nicole's 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith, mysteriously died in her hospital room at Doctors Hospital on September 9 while visiting his mother and his new-born sister, Dannielynn, and the inquest into that death has still not yet been completed in our courts. Surely, if members of the international media were to again focus the amount of attention that they did on The Bahamas earlier this year during the court-battle to determine who was actually the father of Dannielynn, questions would almost certainly be raised about the slow pace of the Bahamian judicial process with regard to the inquest into Daniel's death.

One would have thought that rather than again thrust The Bahamas into another round of negative exposure worldwide, those responsible for the first set of bad publicity would have used better judgment than what King Eric did at the Acklins regatta.

Collie-Pratt did the right thing in dismissing him, and the Government should do the same and fire him as a consultant

King Eric was wrong for what he did in Acklins! And to name the Lucayan Lady, a boat once owned (or maybe still owned) by the St. George's of Freeport after Anna Nicole...what a disgrace.

I think all sailors should boycott King Eric's sailmaking business. But then again there are no other choices. When I move home I will change this.

what is truly tragic is that some of our brain trust at the ministry of tourism STILL think that any publicity is good publicity.

:realmad: It's a shame when we in the bahamas have persons here who insist on thinking bahamians are stupid and i say this of the Gibson family.
Shane was in the papers depending the action taken by his father of this pro who is now dead.He hasn't and will not apologize for the sh*t he did with her and for her to the bahamian nation because he said he do nothing wrong. How long are we as bahamians of our land going to allow persons like the Gibson clan to take advantage of us and openly consider us all to be fools. And everyday we worry about our country state of affairs sh*t if we keep letting persons like them (GIBSON) do and say what they want things will never get better. AND TO HELL WITH ANS EVEN IF SHE P***Y WHIP THEM BEFORE HER DEATH>she was an embaressment for us alive now she doing it again from the grave.
DIG her UP and send HER HOME WHERE EVER THE HELL THAT IS.:voodoo:
