The immigration audit launched by the Department of Immigration last week is just a gimmick, according to former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fox Hill Member of Parliament Fred Mitchell.

Fred annoys me damn! He does not get the reasoning behind the audit, which was to sort and update both government and applicant of the progres of their applications, since there are major communication problems between parties. Then he says the audit is not really the question here, but since its not his idea...it's just a gimmick, anyways.
Really though, does cabinet really have to be the committee on citizenship..among others things? Why cant the immigration department have a body of people or an office on each island that can handle approval of these things? I would recommend the an immigration court or judges too, but looking at the backlog they have already they would not help.

Because the Constitution requires Cabinet to do this. The premise is that the executive of the government of the Bahamas should decide who becomes a citizen of the Bahamas, and therefore becomes entitles to the rights and priveleges of all other Bahamians. Similarly, the executive decides who gets permanent residency, who gets to invest here and become the employer of Bahamians, etc.

We have an 18th Century government working in the 21st Century. We might as well resume sending messages by schooners.

I have been saying from the day I joined the site that having Cabinet approve citizenship is downright silly. If they were serious, they would have a full time committee reviewing those things everyday, not publicly elected officials who should be running the country.

Immagine for messed up the US would be if they had that mess. The President would have to be explain for his inability to respond to a national emergency as Commander-In-Cheif because he was too busy deciding 300,000 applications with his cabinet!
