In case some of you haven't heard, the NGM Major High school in south Long Island outperformed all other Family Island schools (one other in Abaco mentioned in the news that I've never heard of). As far as I am aware, it is the only government school mentioned in this evenings news cast to have above average results. If this is the case, why? Why is it that NGM is outperforming the majority, if not all of the government high schools in the Bahamas on a yearly basis? Are there any lessons that the MOE can learn from the system at NGM or their teaching style or the attitude of the kids etc. What do you'll think might be the deciding factor?

man...whenever NGM is mentioned in the top three school, then I will take notice...
The results are bad man, no one should brag...I think the top schools got like C....then all the other schools followed...Makes one wonder what the other schools got.

Well they did not say who exactly did what...they just mentioned the names of a few schools like St. Andrews, SAC, St. Johns and a few more. They did not say how they compared to NGM or the school that was mentioned in Abaco. My intent is not to brag but to invoke discussion on the matter. Maybe NGM gets better treatment from the MOE...i dont know...but they do do better than the average. Name some other government schools that perform this well year after year. And there is room for improvement across the board, including NGM.

I think SC McPherson (sp?) was the only public school mentioned in the list of NP schools. I'm pretty sure that this isn't the first year that NGM Major has out performed other public schools (I stand to be corrected). The Abaco school is Forest Heights Academy, a private school in Marsh Harbour, Abaco. Their students come from all over Abaco. My son will begin 7th grade at FHA in a few weeks. He will have to take a ferry (7:30 a.m.) to the mainland of Abaco and then a bus every morning. It makes for a long day!
As mentioned on the other thread about these exams, it takes committment. The parents have to be a part of the equation. Take time to read with your children, quiz them for tests, "help" with projects..I admit that I have learned so much in the past 6 years because I worked with my child. And I've read some of the most amazing books!

I think the MOE needs to carry out a brainstorming exercise! Why are some government schools performing better than the others? What are the differences that stand out? As a country we MUST DO BETTER!

nassau and grand bahama are major distractions for the youths (malls, downtown, cable tv etc) whereas other family islands dont have that many distractions. plus classroom overpopulation in the 2 major islands are a major factor in students' abilities to learn properly. i believe the way our population is growing we will need to create about 4 new schools throughout the country every 5 years. then parents dont give a damn about their children learning and their behaviour.

What do you call "to do?" There are a lot of things "to do" on the islands.

Please be careful when comparing government schools examination results as there are a lot of variable out there and there are ways for schools to 'doctor' their results. MOE policy is that ALL students in grade 12 should sit BGCSE in all the subjects that they study.

Some schools follow this ruling and allow any student (regardless of ability) to sit any examination that they wish (as long as they have studied the subject). This leads to lower grades, as you have students with a low academic ability sitting the exam.

Some schools select the students who they allow to take the exams, based on a mock exam result or teacher selection, this tends to improve a schools overall rating.

Some schools go one step further and as MOE says students in grade 12 should sit the exams, they keep the students, who they feel will not do well, back in grade 11 until after exams are taken and then move them back into grade 12 for graduation. This improves grades remarkably.

This is not true of Abaco. Our children may not have malls or movie theatres, but they do have cable, cell phones, internet, satellite t.v., the latest game systems, dvd's, music.....along with the island things to do...fishing, swimming, boating, the beach, boyfriends, girlfriends...the major distractions don' reach!

We do have smaller classes and in small schools the children all come from basically the same backgrounds. However because the schools and classes are smaller, the primary schools usually have combined classes. My son graduated with a class of 7!!! But now he will probably be in a class of 20 plus. In May his class went on a field trip to Nassau. As they walked thru the straw market in their uniforms the vendors asked what school they were from and then they wanted to know where the other students were!! When we told them this was the class, one or two suggested that Nassau students should be sent to the islands to reduce class size in Nassau schools!!!
