Hi CG, CRIME -- the Monster Within is under the category Bahamas Government Services.

Again you are making some good points. I did a little meditation long ago -- did not go too deep into it. One thing it did for me was enabled me to focus my mind on what I am doing regardless of what is happening around me. This is very good for safe driving, etc.

One trait I used to admire in the Englishman was his ability to be cool, calm and collected, no matter what great excitement or calamity was taking place around him. Upon leaving school during my early working years, I worked under a number of English supervisors and I developed much of this same trait. Sometimes it seemed that if a bomb were to explode close by they would pay it no mind but just merrily go along with what they were doing!

Back to the crime situation. Years ago I used to be very concerned that crime would really slow down the tourist industry. There were so many unusual incidents in crime which I think should have been a wake-up call for the government to really go all out and fight against it. One of the most glaring ones was when thieves first started breaking into and stealing from churches. I am not too sure, but I think this first started in the early 1970's.

I think this should really have waken up the authorities because prior to that, no matter how "bad" a criminal was, he was afraid to steal from the church. He probably thought that God would strike him dead or something. It just seems that when all the antisocial/criminal behaviour first began, nothing much was done to really stop it [I am thinking about criminals carrying guns, gangs, drugs, etc].

I just hope that we have not given up!

I think the authorities are awakened to the problem - some of them anyhow but the question is are we, the people, doing enough? As you said before, many people do not report crime - sometimes even dreadful crimes. To many of us benefit, directly or indirectly, from crime. Those who take illegal drugs are benefitting from crime and they are feeding the monster by creating a demand for more drugs. Those who benefit indirectly are those who buy stolen goods! How many times have you heard a person say that they just bought a $200.00 TV for $50.00 from "this guy who comes around in a truck?"

One of the strangest stories I heard of was of a local Pastor whose church was robbed and all their band instruments stolen. A few months latter he was visiting another church on the island and there where his band instruments! He asked that church's pastor how he came by them. He was told that, "A man came by with a truck......." He also paid 25c on the Dollar for them. He had to know they were stolen, particularly as the first church's monogram was on all the instruments!

The Pastor, I am told, did not report it. He left it in God's hands. I have respect for God's hands but this was a matter for the hands of the police.

It is a well known fact that the police does not report all crime incidences. Their reason for this being that it would cause a mass panic within the communities and I agree, how much of us would be able to handle hearing about the actual number of crimes being committed on a daily basis. I for one could not take it. I'd go mad with fear.

Lets face it our government just can't handle it. I don't know if its that they just don't know how, or they really just don't have the man power on the police force what ever the case, the fact is THEY JUST CAN'T HANDLE IT!!!! WE CANNOT DEPEND ON THE GOVERNMENT TO HANDLE IT!!!!

Many years ago in our community crime was not so. We had neighbours that watched out for your house when you were out and looked out for your kids as they played. As the generations went by, something went amiss. You can't reprimand someone's child for being out in the streets to late anymore the parent will cuss you.

We live in a society where our neighbours are now strangers to each other. Good neighbouring is what kept the criminal element out! As we cannot depend on the government to maintain law and order to the fullest, we must now try to go back to Good Neighbouring, being our brothers keeper.

As a christian nation, for those like myself who believe in Christ Jesus, we need to be in constant prayer for our community, for our children, our lives and our souls.

If they are not reported how do we really know they have really happened?

If they have happened and the police have not released the news to the press, then I blame the press for not digging deeper for the story. If they happened then some knows - but we have a weak press here. They seem to have a small nose for news. A good reporter does not wait for a story to be handed to him on a silver palter he goes and digs it out.

If you know of a terrible, unreported by the police crime, call the press and tell them, "Have I got a story for you!" May be if we expose these crimes to the light of public opinion perhaps the police will be pressured to do more

when that last thing happened to me, it was the prosecuters office that gave the press the info, they told me to blame them over it being incorrect!

Did you contact the press to ask them to put the story right?

The answer is simple Ronnie Butler says He remembers when your neighbour was your friend. It has to go back to faith in God and living his ways. Someone has said it unbridled lusts and lore for wealth. We will sell "every ***** and eh bulla" for a dollar and exact from every man, woman and child a pound of flesh.

And of course my child didnt do it cause he is such a good boy. I didnt see antthing cause I dont want to get involved. I een know who live there any way so what if the children screaming all the time. I know she tell me she 12 but she aint mine so who she pregnant for een none a my business. Mind I see them carrying things back and forht from that house but I thought they must be live there although They always come when the other people leave. I dont see anything wrong with not putting down everything I buy from Miami, erry body doing it, eh? Boy my cousin is a drug dealer and I know he can do much for this country. Can you get this passport "fixed" for me I know I supposed to go by the office but you work there and you can get it faster a little favour will not hurt anyone. and I am sure you can add to the list...
