A tiny,17-year-old accompanied by her father walked into The Guardian yesterday with fresh cuts on her neck and knees. A chunk of her braided hair had been torn from her scalp and a huge purple pressure mark was clearly visible on her left arm, all evidence of her recent ordeal. The heart-wrenching story of the teen, relayed by her father, drew focus to an issue that has been grabbing headlines in recent weeks. He alleged that on Monday his daughter was harassed, publicly attacked by a police officer and later jailed at the Central Police Station for almost two days.

Phillip Adderley was not at the scene when the incident occurred, but with his daughter close by his side yesterday and speaking on her behalf, he claimed that his daughter, whose name is being withheld because she is juvenile, was allegedly attacked on Saturday afternoon by one of three officers who entered his daughter's Dean Street Chippingham home without permission. To make matters worse, his teen daughter was at home on bed rest, having been released from the hospital just one day before she was allegedly attacked.

....

Adderley said the officers who entered the home of this daughter and ex-wife were acting on behalf of a friend. The men, he claimed, were in search of a pit-bull dog belonging to his son, but when told by his ex-wife that his son was not at home, the officers reportedly barged into the house without a search warrant and also failed to produce the necessary identification.

Adderley said his ex-wife began to tell the officers that they should not venture into the home because their sick daughter did not have on any clothes.

"She [ex-wife] began to pull one of the officers by his clothes to scare him away but one of the officers pulled out a gun and pointed it at my ex-wife. This is when my daughter put on some clothes and went to see what was going on," Adderley claimed, adding that when his teen daughter realized what was going on, she stepped in front of her mother, hoping to prevent her from being shot.

"My daughter was picked up by the officer with the gun and thrown outside on the grass. My ex-wife was thrown to the floor, busting her mouth and she also received injuries to her arm. He went on top of her [ex-wife], pressed down on her and handcuffed her," he alleged. Adderley said his daughter who ran down the street in search of help, was pursued by the officer and publicly pulled by the hair and dragged about the street in view of the entire neighborhood before she was arrested.

"The people in the streets kept telling him it was wrong, but he said 'I don't give a (expletive). He said if my daughter could throw man blows, then she could take man blows," Adderley said, adding that his ex-wife and daughter were taken in an unmarked car to the Nassau Street Police station but were later transferred to the Central Police station. The teen daughter and her mother were charged with assault, disorderly behavior and destruction. They were discharged from the Central Police Station late Sunday night and are expected to appear in court later this week.

Jeff LLoyd mentioned yesterday that police brutality hit home at More 94fm. He will be talking about this issue today.

Jeff also said he can't get the police to either come on his show or return his calls. Not even his good friend Hulan Hanna.

Imagine that, the police spokesman not 'SPOKIN' lol.

Note to Jeff...........dem hair cut and shave mussy was tooooooooooo close man. After you and the callers grilled the last policeman who came on, you really think those fellas ready for that again. NO BEY!!

This is ridiculous. The only way these corrupt police members will learn is if they get sue or if Bahamians start taking matters into their own hands. Where is the accountability?

Long Time!

Several months ago a few things happened that caused this increased police brutality!! I tried to warn yall that those issues had to be dealt with but yall thought that I was crazy but here we are going on four months later...

1) The police officers disobeyed a direct order from the commissioner not to wear their red shirts at the polls!!

(By the way those of you FNMs who had a problem with Shane disobeying the speaker's direct order but had no problem with our police officers disobeying a direct order from their chief have serious issues and yall need to get some help..Both the police officers and Shane were wrong)

2) HI public firing of Steve and Russell and FNMs had no problem with this..

3) The persons complaining about victimization.

(By the way I was wondering how all these PLPs who are crying victimization for their contracts being cancelled got those contracts in the first place! Shouldn't this govt have the opportunity to give some of their supporters a chance to carry out some of these contracts??? After all we are all Bahamians!!)

Well, now the officers were not disciplined by the commissioner and the PM said that there was nothing wrong with the officers wearing their association shirts but that was not the issue.. The issue was they disobeyed a direct order from their Chief just like Shane did!!!

Now the officers feel unstoppable!!!! I am not saying that we did not always have police brutality but the concern is the massive increase over the past few months!!!!

first, read this knowing I am not an FNM or PLP ...and I really cannot take diehards. :shaky:

1-What/who did Shane Gibson disobey? The cops were wearing those shirts on their own time, they were not on duty at the time so they could do as they wish. Either way you swing, dont see how or what that compares to with the Shane Gibson incident.

2-And? I only remember hearing one of them, and they were a mouthpeice for a political party, meanwhile working for the citizens of the Bahamas; that was the problem and that is why he was removed. I could care less which political party it was, but seeing as it was the one in power at the time, that made it even worse.

3-As we all know, most government contracts are given on the basis of who you know, or who you pay. We also know very well that most work done for the government is sub standard quality, so if a contract was removed then so be it; perhaps there was a more experienced person/company for the job. Since we the people are paying for it, that is all that matters, not who lost what job, but what we are paying for in the end. If you have no problem with crappy and over expensive work, so be it, thats your choice. ;)

That said, I'm not saying all of them were like that in these cases. But I am also not going to say they can keep their contract and money just because someone else thought they were good enough to be given said contract.

4-TO END. What order did Shane Gibson disobey? Simply in his case there was a conflict of interest, he was not professional in the performance of his job as Minister of Immigration, nothing more, nothing less. In the case of the cops, they wore red shirts, so what? If they had been yellow you would not have even mentioned it :shaky:

Not my intention to defend the police, but there are two sides to every story. Given all the negative press the police force has gotten, I can see allot of people morphing their encounters with the police into brutality. Not saying that this isn't or is the case. But its just how people in this country misuse the word victimization, we could get to a point where people misuse the word brutality.

MEL DON THIS BLOGGER REALLY GONE!!!!

BACK TO THE REAL POST!!!

The Police Department is sued more than you know, they have also paid out a lot of money. It is just that a lot of it is done quietly and in some instances they are settled out of court.

Police Officers are now being told by their superiors that, if they are sued for matters such as those mentioned above and it is proven that they have acted outside the confines of the law. THEY ARE ON THEIR OWN!! Even the Police Department has had enough.

sick twisted. i am so f@kin fed up about reading these stories about these f in a holes.

the problem is TOO MANY PEOPLE WHO DONT BELONG IN UNIFORM ARE IN UNIFORM ONLY FOR A PAY CHECK.

they are not trained on how to deal with the public. a man can restrain a woman with out using excessive force.

all i could do is say i dont know and hope things get better for my people cuase it seems as though if the criminals dont turn you into a victim the police will.

Yep I agree, and there are many decent police, that outweighs the bad .. hopefully.

I totally disagree.

The Association's Tee shirts were in place before the election. They were not related to the election. The Commissoner was WRONG to ban them. They did not represent political affiliation, and only a dumb stupid fool could interptret them that way.

Police brutality was on the rise loooong before that incident baby.

Operation "quiet storm" is in full effect. This does not, in the case of our severely untrained police men, in regards to noticing "true" criminal behavior, mean that crime will actually be hindered.

What will happen is, as sad as it is to say this, in order to combat this wave of re-occuring police brutality, which has seemingly spiked since the FNM came to power-and I attribute this to operation queit storm-the hooligans and REAL bad men and women, will simply just start giving police officers civilian brutality and fatal encounters will rise as a result. Not only that, normal citizens will simply defend themselves and this too will add to the fatal encounters.

Mark my word, with this, you will see policemen either gunned down on duty, or, taken out off duty; this country is very small. Then the real war will begin, even before we get to talk about the division in the police force, which seems to be on the lines of a gang affilitations; political dynamics included.

They don't know how to run this country. Not at all. Bahamians are not bad people and we do not deserve to be treated like we are sub-human trash and with ill respect. Yes, we have some bad apples, yes, we have some bad people who make it look bad for even men and women who just look a certain way. But, to start banging up on people, just because you can, and just because operation queit storm gives you the moral authority to do so, and, this government supports your "upped efforts", and, you support them equally (as it appears), does not make what they are doing fair and for that matter, does not mean that it will decrease crime.Profiling is one thing, but beating up on the citizenry is another. If they, the police force, don't stop themselves, I would not blame the citizenry to protect themselves, and put a stop to them; by any means neccesary.
