The nation's traffic fatality count rose to 28 over the weekend when a male was struck by a vehicle while walking in the area of Carmichael Road.

Police press liaison officer ASP Walter Evans said the victim was running away from some dogs shortly after 11:00 p.m. last Friday night, when he ran into the streets and was hit by a Nissan Sentra. The victim, who remains unidentified, died at the scene.

Police officials are still investigating this incident and Evans said that the public's assistance would be "greatly appreciated."

That is so very sad. I notice that here in Grand Bahama I never see stray dogs. I thought it was the same in Nassau.

Yeah, sad but true.

I was in Andros two weeks ago and did not notice much if any and not one on Long Island both in Feb. and May of this year.

People say it's bad in the Bahamas but not really, just NP!

Yep, Nassau. :(

But seriously, they can very easily deal with this problem by going around the island between 12am and 5am and taking the packs of strays off the roads. They are EVERYWHERE at that time in the morning, packs and trailer loads of them. And most are extremely vicious.

I don't feel sorry fa dem set in Nassau though. If they would share and stop packing up erry ting in NP, then they would not be in that predicament.

No symapthy for Nassau from me. :sailing:

(It is a shame though that this young man was killed for this. Prayers for his family.)

You must have been in a different part of Andros to me then! They are quite bad here again, in fact we are having a big problem with a pack that has moved into the bush next to our home. They try to attack anyone who comes to our house and when our dog barks at them, they try to attack him to.

It is truly sad that someone had to lose their life over this.
If people would spay & neuter their animals, and keep them fenced on their property, we would not have such a big problem. Until the humans learn a little bit of sense the animals will continue to suffer.
Usually the potcakes are not aggressive. But they are breeding with Pitts that are left to run and breed with them. Therefore you will see more and more aggression in the packs.
Abaco has a bad problem with strays as well as Nassau.

Not the most sensitive position, but perhaps we have to start putting these dogs to sleep?

I am a dog lover and I think putting the strays to sleep would help, but it wont solve the problem.
People have animals and let them roam, they are not fixed, they breed, unwanted pups in the bush...cycle starts over again.
The ones out there now need to be caught and homed or euthanized, and then there need to be stricter laws about spaying & neutering and fencing in your dogs.
I think if there were a tax for having an intact (unfixed) dog, maybe people would reconsider spaying/neutering.
Just my opinion. :)

YOu know over here in Grand Bahama a lot of Expats have adopted potcakes until they find them owners, I have a friend who is a foster parent to three dogs.

Yes, GB has a proactive Humane society run by Francis-Singer Hayward. I remember when she used to come to the primary schools and show her prized "amigo" and teach about cruelty to pets and lack of care. And you can adopt from there.

People should never be afraid of dogs and run from them..dogs can look at you and tell when you are scared of them..if that poor man had a piece of stick he could have bent down and whop the dickens out of those dogs with some back and forth strokes similar to backhand and forehand strokes in the game of tennis.

Thanks to my late dad who taught us how to defend ourselves against dogs, one day a couple years ago I had to use what he taught me at Montagu beach one morning. As I was entering the water there was a guy there with about six young dogs and they all viciously flew at me -- I suddenly bent down, snatched my steel rimmed goggles and swung vigorously at their mouths and front legs and in no time they all ran off screaming and hollering. Maybe I knocked out a couple of teeth, I don't know..

Then the owner had the nerve to ask why I had hurt his dogs. I politely told him that they just messed with the wrong person that morning as I swam out..

When I came back to shore, a number of people who had watched the episode complimented me for defending myself. They also told me that those same dogs took to the street and ran down and attacked a number of tourist shortly after I swam out.

Can't really understand why the authorities are not controlling these stray dogs. I recall about 6 or 7 years ago thare was a talk show with a couple of persons from the Humane Society who claimed that they had put together a good programme for dog control which they had given to the government, hoping that it would be implemented. It was probably shelved, as I heard nothing further regarding it.
