Dear Sir,

About two weeks ago I had a sobering experience of which I have been reluctant to make the Bahamian public aware . Reluctant because I thought that I was doing what any self-respecting, red-blooded Bahamian would and should be doing when confronted with what I am about to disclose.

At the time I was a passenger on the flight from Havana, Cuba. The flight was delayed whilst the bus was at the aircraft awaiting clearance to board. This exercise took about 45 minutes. It appeared as though the officials were searching for contraband.

There were six white Americans and one black American. They all seemed to be wearing a uniform in that the whites were clad in Bermuda shorts and polo shirts and loafers. The one black wore long pants and polo shirt.

Now we have a penchant for identifying Caribbean blacks - Cuban, Jamaican and Haitian, especially, - as illegal immigrants. However, based on what I saw and heard on that bus the American whites are a dangerously sinister group. Here is what I overheard from the fellow who was indeed in charge of this human smuggling operation. He was explaining in detail what was happening and how these fellows were supposed to act. Obviously they had entered Cuba from a third country with the express purpose of residing and working in The Bahamas.....

No,

he has a problem with folks sneaking in the country to work, lying to Immigration and Immigration doing nothing.

I think I remember you saying a few weeks ago how many of these Canadians/Americans/Brits and others sneak in, undercut prices, work without papers and party down in the bars.

LOL!

Well this is nothing new -- I am sure it was carried on in the UBP days, but now it seems to have reached a new level and larger scale. An Immigration officer really has to be committed and patriotic in order to stop this kind of illegality.

Back in the day, the company "bringing" in expatriates had all kinds of little messy tricks they used to use to throw Immigration off. Some officers might not be too keen on stopping it so that their buddies can recieve kickbacks..

Where does he say he has a problem with white people. I'm reading this and what he says was Caribbean people "Haitians, Jamaicans, Cubans" as he listed are seen as illegal immigrants while the Americans aren't. Did the word "sinister" make you beleive he meant he had a problem with whites, he said "based on what he saw and heard the American whites are a sinister group".

Anyway I'm in the USA and its the same issue. They blame all of the immigration on the people of color "Mexicans/South Americans, Middle-Easterners, Caribbean" but don't mention Canada, Europe etc.

Guess next time the writer should just "mind his own business", and not worry about his country, ignorance is bliss.

And yes, you can search the forum to see where i mention that alot. But there is no need to bring white and black into the equation. Its like me saying (not describing them to the police, just in general speaking) the 2 people that robbed me few years back were 2 big black men. Yah dig?

"I shudder to think of how many of those people are in this country to the detriment of black Bahamians. No wonder there are white bouncers hired and brought into this country and we have black Bahamians who are quite prepared to do Massa's bidding by designating them "door managers". What a farce."

I really dont care if he likes us or not to be honest, but if he ran on to immigration about that crap they would just ignore him then.

Personally I realize most of the big money here is going out the country to the americans and canadians .. and alot of them are right here illegally - but hey just so he knows, they dont have to go through Cuba, they come direct from the US. And it appears Imigration know something about it, or they just dont want to deal with it.

for what it's worth, this is also the informal procedure that u.s. citizens use to travel to and from havana (from nassau) without having their passports stamped ... sometimes you get a bahamian customs officer who's a stickler for protocol (yay!) and insists on stamping the passport, which is where the saga of the $10 bribe comes in ... all too often it works.

just a thought.

rory, the reason the writer specifically noted those generalizations, that black caribbeans are more often considered "illegal immigrants" is that it has been historically true in the bahamas that americans and european whites just aren't as bitterly ostracized and reviled for illegally working here. they get away with it!!!!!

what confuses is me is why would the americans enter the bahamas through cuba?

americans can not fly from the usa to cuba so that tells me they had to fly from the usa to some other country, then to cuba and then to the bahamas. to me that seems like alot of work.

in any even the article the person wrote speaks of is very serious. alot of attention is placed on the haitians, jamaicans etc etc and rightly so. HOWEVER the bahamas acts as though americans and canadians dont enter the bahamas to work illigally.

whats even worst about it is the americans, canadians, uk people tend to take the limited jobs.

lastly bahamas immigration to a certain extent is slack. has anyone ever visited the bahamas immigration website to see who does not need a visa to enter the bahamas.

trust me you would be surprised. think about it jamaicans dont need a visa to visit the bahamas and i know of many many jamaicans who enter the bahamas for a "visit" and dont leave and when i say dont leave i mean they in the bahamas illegal.

instead of giving a plane full of jamaicans a hassle when they land at NIA, require that they must apply for a visa via mail. BTW- i am using jamiaca as an example, there are many countries citizens who should be held to the same requirement.

so if the bahamas gov stipulate that you must apply for a visa via mail and meet certain requirements such as a job, x amount in the bank etc. the foolishness that occur at NIA when a Air Jamaica flight lands would not have to take place. show ur visa and keep movin

another lax part about bahamas immigration is people can get work permit after work permit. there should be a requirement that after three yrs on a work permit the person must return to their country for at least a year before another work permit will be issued. or they could do like the cayman islands, after five yrs on a work permit the person is no longer eligable for a work permit in that country.
