Hurricane Dean may not have passed over The Bahamas, but it left a very climactic indication that it was nearby; New Providence experienced an island wide power outage.
A statement from the Bahamas Electricity Corporation reported that at the height of the severe thunderstorm that occurred on Saturday morning, lightening struck the BEC electrical system resulting in an island wide black out around 8:00 a.m.
The statement continued that BEC staff began assessing the extent of the outage, and when the "wide scope" of the problem was ascertained, more workers were called in to aide in the restoration process.
Work was ongoing throughout the island Saturday to complete the restoration but by mid-afternoon, some areas were still without electricity.
All of BEC’s emergency numbers were not working and [B]customers were asked to contact BEC at a "temporary" emergency number.
