View Full Version : Legislation being drafted to address the stray dog problem
Legislation is currently being drafted to address the long ignored problem of stray dogs in The Bahamas and could be made into law by the end of the year, said Minister of Agriculture Minister Lawrence Cartwright, after the latest traffic fatality highlighted the need to tackle the issue.
On Friday, 48-year-old Coral Harbour resident Jeffrey Powell's life came to a crashing end after he was struck by a Nissan Sentra while trying to escape a pack of dogs. He died shortly after 11 o'clock that night.
While it has not been determined whether the animals were stray dogs or pets that were not properly secured, the minister said that both scenarios were unacceptable.
The Animal Protection and Control Bill could come into force by the end of the year, said Cartwright, who believes dogs who have owners, and not strays, represent the biggest challenge.

Side track.................. but Mike Vick would love you right now, lmao, lol!!!!!!!
But seriously... a lil too brutal don't ya think. Then again I don't know what all hell and brimstone these strays may have brought on you......... but I do understand your frank regard for the issue of strays.
bahmaboy 08-21-07, - 03:06 PM so it took someone's death to get the gov's attention.
i have a question what does and is the gov of the bahamas doing anyway.
what i am trying to say is they always in the house of assembly, they supposed to be working YET nothing seems to be changing.
the problems that were problems yesterday are still a problem today.
this man died very recently like over the weekend? and today is tues and they started drafting legislation!!!!!!!!!!??????
so what the hell was they doing for the past decades when those dogs was "runnin tings" in nassau.
Sunnyjohn 08-21-07, - 03:08 PM Bahmaboy,
You are saying what folks have been saying since almost since Columbus lifted anchor and left in 1492....
chancellor 08-21-07, - 03:17 PM But legislation could just be yet another extra page in the law book, ready to accept newly dispersed dust.

Quite right Chancellor, all the laws in the world mean NOTHING if they are NOT enforced. (suck teeth!)
Khatty 08-21-07, - 05:35 PM The government really needs to do something about animal control on the whole and not just focus on strays. Look at other countries like the USA and the UK where they have leash laws etc. Hell, I can't even walk around certain corners without having someone's dog running out to the road and barking at me. In my opinion, you shouldn't have a dog unless you have an enclosed yard to keep it in (i'm not in favour of keeping them tied to a post all day either). Further they need to go back to days when the humane society van would drive around and pick up stray and unkept dogs. I know there are even laws the say you should purchase a dog license if you have a dog and these aren't even enforced.
It is sad indeed that it took a death to bring this issue to light, now that this has happened i hope that the issue will be properly dealt with and not just fall by the wayside until another death brings it up again. :hammer:

it may sound brutal, but what other options are there? bahamians too often think that neutering a dog has something to do with its masculinity (or theirs!) so not a whole lot happens to resolve the issue.
as a little girl, i watched helplessly as two of our pet cats were devoured by potcakes, at which point my father let it be known that his (licensed) .22 would take care of any other untagged, unruly dogs who came into the yard to munch the rest.
and yes, sunny, this was 1969, so not a whole lot HAS changed since columbus set sail for hispaniola :footmouth.
Sunnyjohn 08-21-07, - 06:57 PM I love animals.
I think it is cruel the way we let these packs of wild dogs just roam the streets.
Frankly it's time for a massive dogcatcher/adoption/neuter/license/rabies shot/euthanasia program.
If you want a dog or cat you should pay for the license, yearly rabies shot and to have the animal fixed. No animal breeding without a permit (so we can know who to blame for the madness).
If you have no fenced yard or are not in those wide open yards like the Out Islands you sure as heck can't properly take care of a dog.
The Bahamas Potcake is a majestic beast. Let's not treat him so cruelly by not taking care of him.

I saw an American lady in a US newspaper with a potcake in a puppy fashion show.
She had a big write up about how her dog was a Bahamas potcake and so brilliant. I think she rescues them.
NetConnect 08-21-07, - 07:58 PM 6 months ago, wife and I picked up 2 strays (Potcakes) 1 in Coral Harbou and one in back of the bush. Had them checked out, shots and spayed/neutered. Best 2 dogs on the face of the earth and they let us know when someone wants to visit the big yard or beach without our knowledge in Adelaide.
They are not chained, yet know what the fence means, and no they do not bite, just bark until one of us goes outside to say it is ok.
chancellor 08-21-07, - 08:04 PM But to think, all these stray dogs around and people still buy pups......
bahmaboy 08-22-07, - 04:30 PM the saddest thing about that potcake place website is that outsider's care more and are ttrying harder to fix the problem.
someone said on here before that tourist enjoy seeing potcakes. i still wondering how they get that idea.
oh yeah while they are "drafting legislation" cant the gov simple advertise that starting from such and such a day we will be rounding up all stray dogs found on the street. so fence your dog, tag him and if you walk him use a leash.
it may sound cruel but i think they should round up, put down the sickly ones, try to adopt the healthy ones and if they dont get adopted put them down to.
