The government's commitment to construct 3,000 new homes before the end of its five-year term may not fully come to fruition, as the Ministry of Housing is in dire need of money to pay off its debts – more than $300 million, to be exact.

And even though $6.3 million has been set-aside in this year's budget for the Ministry of Housing and another $1.1 million was allocated to the Department of Housing, those funds are being used to repair the shoddy workmanship on homes that were reportedly built by the former government.

The ministry also owes some $24 million to government and private contractors, as well as The Bahamas Mortgage Corporation, admitted Housing Minister Kenneth Russell in an interview with The Nassau Guardian on Tuesday.

That's what I thought too. Who ever is responsible for the 'headline' text on the Guardian site should be shot for making so many mistakes so frequently.

what you should ask is why is the FNM stooping to the PLP's level. why pledge 3,000 new houses by the end of the term cuase the PLP did like 2,000 or something like that.

what they should do is pledge to move more jobs to Freeport so the people will follow and you can build those houses there.

people should be scared becuase i am sure the majority of those house was planning to be built in nassau. people should ask why is nassau needing more and more and more and more low cost homes that cost well over 100 grand.

I have the same question as Sunny, why in the hell is government paying to fix shoddy workmanship? That is just stupid! The contractor who did the shoddy workmanship should fix it at no cost to the government. Are they (government) retarded? If i hire someone to do a job they had better do it right or they are not getting paid. Now we are talking about government, they must have some recourse, take the contractors licence away from him. Can you imagine the precedent this sets. This is all about accountability, hold those that did the shoddy work accountable, charge them for the repairs if they are unable to do a satisfactory job, take their licence if they do not pay or fix the wrongs!

THIS MENTALITY IS EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE BAHAMAS! How in the hell can you justify such a statement. It is time to GROW UP and face the music as a nation. It is time that we air out that dirty laundry as it is KILLING US as a nation. Why must the entire nation pay for some scumbag(contractor) that does not know the meaning of pride and honesty. Why must the people who bought these "houses" suffer. Why must government pay twice for one job? I will tell you why! This nation holds nobody accountable for their actions! We do not uphold our laws, shoot there basically is no law, plenty on the books but 99.9 of them are NOT ENFORCED. We are like a bunch of baby's running around in pampers that know they should not pee in the pampers but still do and wonder why we have a rash! The government of this country is PATHETIC! Our government is meant to enact laws and UPHOLD those laws. They sure as hell can enact the laws because all you need to do is talk(We good at talking) but UPHOLD the law, ya gat to be joking. Why do Bahamians OBEY the laws in the U.S. ? Because they know Johnny Law will sort them right out and hold them accountable for their actions if they step out of line. Aint gonna change neither, this been the same way from as long as I can remember .. it would be nice if it were too ... but doubt it .. check this forum back in 2003 and you will see we were talking the same things .. i gave up after a while .. as its just a waste of our time :(
