PS. there has to be more than 20,000, there seems to be at least 5-10 on every corner from 12am-5am.
ching357 08-23-07, - 07:48 AM i agree we have a serious stry dog problem and something needs to be done and persons are calling for laws to be put in place to deal with owners and others that cause the problems.
But what i find funny is that we want to enforce fines and punishment to persons concerning dogs damages and threatment, but what about the parents of kids.
There is no out cry for fines and punishment for parents who's kids destroy peoples property or cause's harm to another child and the saying goes kids are our future, not dogs but laws would be carried out for them.
There are alot of kids out there who carry on just like packs of stry dogs causing problems so we need to address that aswell and start dealing with some of these worthless parents.
If you understand what am trying to say.:fly:
Both of my sisters were very involved in getting legislation passed to control these dogs. They worked on it for years! (I believe some of the stuff in the regulations being set before the House is theirs) They said it was so frustrating trying to get the powers that be even to listen. Their struggle went on for years! One government guy even suggested they were just White women with nothing better to do!!!!
This dog thing is symptomatic of other problems that trouble us. Most are easy to fix but what we lack is the commitment to do it - and in some cases, the smarts to do it. It is as if the powers don't want to make a commitment until things get so bad there is a real danger to the public. Even they they want to pass the buck onto someone else - who is equally reluctant to act! Everyone hopes the problem will just go away by itself.
These laws could have been passed years ago. The Animal Control Unit could have been strengthen. If so, the guy would not have been killed the other day by having to run into traffic to avoid a pack of dogs. His blood is on the hands of those "buck passers" in a number of governments.
Sunnyjohn 08-23-07, - 09:39 AM How hard is it for them to warn folks to lock up their dogs, then go out for two weeks with a handful of trucks and round up the strays?
Put the puppies and the healthy ones up for adoption. Put to sleep the sick ones.
The dog owner bears the brunt, but many of these strays have no owner.
There is even a company in the States that helps adopt Bahamas Potcakes. Use them. Then offer a couple to the tourist with papers and ting as "the ultimate Bahamian gift".
I love dogs and it sad to think of putting them down, but we are not doing the dogs any favor by allowing them to roam free and get diseases. This is a rabies epidemic waiting to happen.

we have been doing this in the out islands for years and years and years. people are asked to lock up their dogs. some do, some don't. dogs continue to wander the streets, hassling locals and biting tourists. the vets come in and offer free spay/neuter clinics, some of the potcakes get taken care of, a few of them get adopted and shipped overseas.
most of the dogs get ignored by their "owners" until such time as a government entity DOES come in and take care of business, at which point some of said owners inevitably come crying to local government 'bout local government killing they mama dog, and asking for restitution. it's a never-ending drama around here.

So true. Our potcakes are let to roam to freely. This is really too bad. But, they are our animals. And, if it were birds, we would be saying "look at the lovely birds"...but, because they roam the streets, and, they tend to be dogs, we have a problem with the way it looks.
It is a cultural thing and to be honest, most Bahamians do not have a problem with the dogs. It is some of these people, who think that because they have seen animal control elsewhere where it is a practice, they equate that to the level of progress or pedigree "pardon the pun" of the society.
Now, I would be the first ti admit that the dirty stray dogs are an eyesore. But, not all potcakes, because you see them roaming, are dangerous and un-owned.

a happy, fed potcake is a beautiful thing. a starving, angry potcake is a health hazard.

But WHY would you let your dog run free all day long to catch disease and get hit by cars?
Our Potcake used to run out of the gate when daddy opened the fence in the evening, but he would never venture outside our parking lot or further than next door. 5 minutes and if you hollered out his name he came running. It was a game to him.
He wasn't about to risk his dinner my daddy fresh-cooked for him dat night. NO SIR!
This is a rabies epidemic waiting to happen.

Alien 08-23-07, - 11:45 AM I had a dog, who was just recently poisoned by a neighbour (I suspect). Mum was crushed, as he suffered and she did not even realize that he was that sick.
It was a one day slip up, where the gardener came to weed, and they let him out of the gate. After that day, he progressively got worse and we now know that it was poison.
But, you know what gets me? Pigeons. Damn I hate those animals. They crap on you and your car, and all else if you get in their way.
But, people think, en-masse, that they are wonderful creatures. Some have even said that when they crap on you, it's good luck. No thank you. However, we need to control mangy stray's, but, we have to find a way to take care of these "out-side animals", which is what they are, the best way possible.
They are a part of the culture, to be totally honest. I would support a save a potcake agenda, and, put it in a way where stray's are taken care of. We, like we have with the Haitians, have to get out of a certain mindset. In one end, Haitians are dirty filthy no good vodoo practicing war mongerers, who will destroy this country bit by bit if we let them. And, on the other, that potcakes and strays, because we see it being administered in other cultures are an eyesore because these people say it's so.
Just like the birds of capistrano, we need to have our potcakes of the Bahamas well taken care of.
Native Stew 08-23-07, - 12:42 PM here are some ways we abuse our Potcakes. (wildLife of The Bahamas) :)
1. hardly feed them
2. don't bathe them
3 throw rocks at them
4. knock them down and don't stop ("das only a potcake")
5. don't get them licensed or use collars.
6. leave them out in the weather. rain, storm, heat or hurricane.(no dog house)
7. poison them
8 throw hot boiling water on them or acid.
9. kick them
10. leave them untied to roam the streets and breed or get knocked down
11. leave them tied always(24/7)
