View Full Version : Govt. to let go of 200 workers
Over two dozen employees were fired from the Ministry of Works this week after government officials claimed they were hired without proper protocol by the previous government.
In an interview with The Nassau Guardian yesterday, Minister of Works Earl Deveaux said the firings were likely to be done in many of the ministries over the next few weeks after more than 200 people were discovered to be working without official letters of appointment.
He explained that in his ministry, about 47 people were hired between April 16 to 30, 2007 and only 21 had letters of appointment on month-to-month terms. "They were not hired on permanent pensionable conditions," Deveaux said. "They were assigned to different places like [the] Environmental Health and Roads and Park [department] and we didn't know where they were until people came looking for money saying they were working for three months."
"I gather there are several hundred persons throughout government services who were told to just go work."
...
Deveaux shied away from calling the situation a clean up process behind the former Progressive Liberal Party government, he did point out that the dates they were hired were close to the May 2 date of the last general elections.

Truthseeker 08-24-07, - 12:38 PM There are too many civil servants anyway. 200 is a good start...Now finish the job and clean up every ministry in the country. Get rid of the slackers and old-heads by any legal means necessary.

who hired you...
your mp?
but still...
should these people get pay...I mean if they worked?
And how come the government didn't do a complete audit of how many persons are needed in the various goverment agencies in contrasts to how many people actually work there. Perhaps some of these people could have been transferred. I wonder if any of these people have any special skills.

nah...
it ga only be victimization if everyone they fired were PLP
and if they were qualified to do the job
and if their is a real labour shortage at the ministry...
and if that particular ministry hires anyone in the next 2 years...something wrong.

Bouy I tell ya. Yinna hacks is the bestest. Point a fact, you CAN NOT fire someone UNLESS they were hired.

Perhaps these were temporary workers and are subject to dismissal at the whim of their employer. This is certainly not a case of victimization which would require the government to know precisely who voted for whom. Therefore, if in fact this is victimization, then person from all political persuasions were victimized.

Never said it was victimization. But I guess thats what you feel it is in your inner child. BTW: I do believe you can make and educated guess which way the mins. believed they voted based on his comments.
