Six Cuban nationals detained at the Carmichael Road Detention Center escaped from custody during visiting hours Tuesday, Aug. 21.
The escape occurred at about 2:50 p.m. Up to press time last night, only one of the escapees, Rubidelvis Cala Merencio, had turned himself in to the Carmichael Road Detention Centre. He returned yesterday around 8 a.m. He was apparently injured in the escape and was taken to the clinic, treated and returned to the Centre.
The other five Cubans remain at large.
A statement issued late last night from the Department of Immigration said the men escaped by cutting a hole through the chain link fence behind their dormitory and scaling the perimeter wall of the center by using a homemade grappling hook.
