View Full Version : American Eyeing Bacardi plant!
Sunnyjohn 08-27-07, - 10:06 AM At least one rum producer is expressing interest in buying the Nassau Bacardi facility, only days after the announcement that the 42-year operation will close in 2009.
"Yes, sir, we're interested," said Phil Pritchard, owner of Pritchards' Distillery in Tennessee. "I was trying to figure out a trip to Dominica to look into the possibility of opening a distillery there, but why do that if we can go to Nassau?"
Interest from the American comes on the heels of Bacardi's decision to close its Bahamian operations in April 2009.

Sunnyjohn 08-27-07, - 10:08 AM This is my favorite line:
"The world is a lot bigger than the United States," said the proprietor of the admittedly small operation.
If this fella, an America can see the value of selling his product outside the US, why can't Bahamians see the same value?
We have a long history of involvement with rum. Perhaps some Bahamian will buy the plant and start the next great liquor brand.....

Sunnyjohn 08-27-07, - 10:29 AM Yes, I visited Pritchard's site.
I'm sure he makes a good product. Most of the Tennessee whiskey producers do.
Still, I don't get why a Bahamian doesn't step in, by the place and brew a distinctly Bahamian rum blend.
Liquor producing has become big business all over the world. In the Nassau Guardian article Pritchard said how BIG the "Made in the Bahamas" label would set his product apart. Their are people all over the world that would love to buy "the new Wets Indian rum."
The Bahamas is looking to diversify. A new Bahamian rum sounds like a good step one to me.

Since you can't get it, what are YOU waiting on? Do it!

If you do maybe the plant can actually make some good rum for once :bouncy:

and we already have a few good local rums being made here, like the don q line in freeport, yer'ho and chickcharney brands. could baic lead the charge to turn the distillery plant into an incubator for a number of bahamian rum varietals? the time is now, as the world has discovered rum in a big way lately.
wonder whether phil pritchard is related to asa pritchard ... or is that a coincidence? keeping fingers crossed.

Phil is an American, but I guess anything is possible in this small world.
