Please go an buy this month's copy of "SMART MONEY" magazine.

There is a section in there on the Dominican Republic and all the business going on in that country.

We are gonna get out hip handed to us if we don't wake up soon.

was it an advertisment...you know they do that? but when I go into my spot,bn, ill be sure to "browse" the issue...
other than that:
they have the human capitol (cheap labour)
seem to take their environment seriously
tourism product is a good bargain compared to ours
the sex trade cottage industry keeps the men coming! (like brazil and cuba)
they have race relations issues too (wrt to haitians and amongst themselves- they dont think their black!)

a little off base but did you see this series in the herald? (quietly, I think the herald team is gonna get a pulitzer for their work and I went to the exhibit too-coulda walked so close to my house)http://www.miamiherald.com/multimedia/news/afrolatin/index.html

Bahamian Artist (when I have some time I must go! it een far from Sheba either)

they dont speak english.

With our D- school average, we don't speak or read English too good 'needer! LOL! :P

Folks don't care what you speak so much. Companies want labour and friendly business environments. Tourism is also BOOMING in the DR.

You should visit. The people are nice and it is fairly cheap. Since you like pretty girls you'd be in hog heaven.

Yes.

Many of the facts were true though.

They had some problems with that last juc' arse of a President, but they are doing much better.

Our group has done business down there and been very successful.
(stuff we wanted to do in the Bahamas but just could not for many reasons)

Does your B&N have a Starbucks? I need a mint choc skim iced frap.

a certain traveller will enjoy the dominican republic, but that country is night and day from the bahamas. i've taken several business meetings there, and while the basic infrastructure (freeways, airport, business centers) is in place, the local people are under lock and guard from the tourist sites. you can't wander anywhere without a tour guide, and the tour guides in turn won't let you explore anything off of the beaten path. combine that with local hungry people begging for food at the all-inclusive resorts, and what you've got is less than ideal.

I agree, it is not ideal. They still have a long way to go.

The business environment is improving though. I really wanted Bahamians to see how a government can move a country toward economic diversity and growth if that government (and its people) are willing to move forward.

say a certain traveler say what you mean! dont cover it up with euphemisms! my friend went and he said he had a good time- his friend fall in love with a dr woman- I told him to tell his friend to use condoms before he holds her hand to go to the clinic and get tested- the aids rate is high there!

okay :) ... someone who loves the remoteness of atlantis from anything resembling bahamian culture will love santo domingo, casa de campo et al. someone who loves the laidback out island resorts most certainly will not.
