View Full Version : BDM says, "TAX THEM!"
Sunnyjohn 09-04-07, - 09:33 AM BDM Leader Questions “Generous” Tax Concessions
By Quincy Parker
Leader of the Bahamas Democratic Movement Cassius Stuart is questioning the policy of successive governments of The Bahamas to give generous tax concessions to foreign investors, and calling for better negotiators to sit across the table from these investors.
Mr. Stuart said The Bahamas’ government has been too generous, particularly with casino, land and import duty concessions.
As Mr. Stuart sees it, the generous concessions investors get from the Bahamian government amount to allowing them to do business in The Bahamas "tax free."
"Foreigners come to The Bahamas, not because they love Bahamians; they come to The Bahamas because they’re making millions and millions of dollars. So we have to get that fact straight (in our minds). They are looking at our markets, not because they are interested in making sure they give a Bahamian a job, but because the return on their investment will be great," Mr. Stuart said....

Sunnyjohn 09-04-07, - 09:34 AM We could find that money by taxing foreign direct investment," he said. "We have all of these foreigners coming here making hundreds of millions of dollars – salaries untaxed, their investment untaxed. We can no longer sustain that."
Mr. Stuart complained that successive governments have been too generous with the tax breaks they give to foreign investors.
"We have to look at the land tax. We also have to look at the import duty tax as well. We have to revisit that. We cannot afford to give away casino taxes the way we’ve been giving away casino taxes – that is not a wise and economic decision," he said.
"So all of these methods of taxation we have to look at. We also have to look at employment tax."
He suggested that The Bahamas might start looking at taxing a certain income bracket.
"We cannot sustain (being a tax free haven) any longer," he said.
Sunnyjohn 09-04-07, - 09:36 AM We do have to look at these things.
Cassius may be able to sell the casino and foreigner tax, but he will have a hard time convincing Bahamians to agree to an employment or income tax.
Yinna tink tax is a cuss word and we like free tings from we gubments.

FACTS ONLY 09-04-07, - 10:04 AM Maybe, just maybe, one of these days Cassius will learn, the HARD way, IT IS EASY TO PLAY POLITICS WHILE IN OPPOSITION, OR, AS THE ARMCHAIR ANYALIST!!

True. VERY TRUE.
But he is not lying. We do need a new tax system.
Cassius needs to learn how to be more convincing. The masses have a sweet mouth. They need to see words followed by swift and constant action.
The BDM needs to hire a political consultant ASAP. I here Donna Brazil is available.
The 2012 election is theirs to loose.

:footmouth Cassius has alot of good worded ideas for the country but he isn't a seller to the people. The moment he learn how to become a seller to the people he would start to see more supporters, and another problem is we all can be an armchair anyalist but the moment some of us are place with the cookie jar we start to dip and start to go of course theproblem we are face with now.
Cassius needs a good veteran with him in his party to gain solid momentum and if he could win just a few seats and learn from the inside without going astray he will have a chance to be prime minister someday.
But for now getting all hyper isn't going to help because he is still on the outside trying to get in and they have problems of there own in his party with omar archer and frankly he is now in the public's eye more than cassius and becoming acceptable to the people.:dgi:

Decent means:
1. Your middle name is not "teif"
2. You don't fancy yourself a contractor who can't add or build a housethat is not lopsided.
3. You don't take "cuts" or give your "cousins'" free trips to "Me-yam-ee" on Bahamasair
4. You actually pay for your car license plates
5. You don't wear a bush jacket or coat suit to a fish fry.

Decent people carn get elected to anything, not even a Deaconship; And nobody pays them any mind, anywho. Tell people free healthcare, tuition, cyar, boat and plane and house...and throw in a box lunch, then you may have somewhere to start from. We need a dictatorship; democracy is not working here. It is too difficult to get anything done and if the authorities whack someone, nosey people start poking around asking questions. I say whack those two guys who killed that security guard tonight, and while they slumber and stop wasting time and money. Look at how hard it is to make a law? You have to draft it, correct it, send it out for feeling up, re-draft it, place it on the agenda, read it 10 times...well you get the idea. Waste of freakin' good fishing time! Give Ingraham power to rule by decree and let's go fishing!
