Caution Urged On Exchange Control Abolition

A former parliamentary secretary in the ministry of finance is urging that the government tread carefully as it moves toward making drastic alterations in at least one aspect of the country’s economy.
PLP Senator Michael Halkitis is urging the Ingraham Administration to exercise caution while engineering the abolition of exchange controls.
The current administration has made no secret of its intention to abolish exchange controls in the Bahamas within the next five years.
In fact, page six of the 2007 Free National Movement’s manifesto said it intends to do just that in order to "strengthen our economy, promote increased Bahamian ownership and wealth and create new, high quality jobs…"
"Any sort of talk of abolition needs to be approached with a lot of caution," former Adelaide Member of Parliament Michael Halkitis – who is also a Certified Financial Analyst – recently told The Bahama Journal.
