Because, economially, it became non-viable. In the long run it was cheaper to pay a pittance wage rather that provide housing, food, etc.

Rather than go around the block with these questions, just get to the point and come out and say whatever it is you want to say. Do you think slavery is right? Do you think it shouldn't have been abolished? Are you thinking about trying to inslave someone or bring back the slave trade? Or are you just bored and trying to ruffle peoples feathers?
