Bahamas Supermarkets Limited (BSL), operators of 12 City Market stores in New Providence and Grand Bahama, announced today it has named Evangeline ˜Vangy" Rahming, FCCA, Financial Controller.

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Evangeline Rahming who brings more than 10 years' experience in public accounting, said Bryan Knowles, Vice President and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of the company with annual sales of some $140 million.

A Bahamian, Ms. Rahming is a UK-certified accountant, a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants and a member of The Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA). She holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Windsor, Canada.

Her appointment is part of a strengthening exercise to bring additional top professional management skills to the company following its transition just over a year ago when majority shares were purchased from foreign-owned Winn-Dixie. Since then, Bahamas Supermarkets with some 2,500 shareholders has made major capital investments, undertaking store improvements, upgrading equipment, building its human resources training, broadening product lines and installing new systems. Last January, it opened the first new store in over a decade, unveiling its new signature style with brighter lighting, wider aisles, price scanners for customer use at aisle ends, an expanded organic foods section and full deli. The company expects to complete installation of point-of-sales scanners in all 12 stores by mid-February.

BSL supports numerous community efforts but is best recognised for its ambitious scholarship program. Since its inception in 1988, it has awarded more than $7.8 million in scholarship funds, helping to pave the way for nearly 1,600 students to further their education, among them the newly-appointed Financial Controller.

Congrats to ma Eleuthera gal.. but I still connot understand why would Bahamas Super Market still allow Dianne Phillips to be their PR consultans... she has little or no regard for Black Bahamians.. IN fact if you go to Diane for consultant advise she normally tells you to just bring in a white person to do the jobs as Bahamians response better to white people then they do to their own people...

    THIS IS A FACT..........

I heard her with my own ears.......
It's amazing when you're black and u challenge bigotry and racism and someone thinks u hate white people. No, I hate bigots and racists!

"Yep Robin Hood already closed down one of their locations and when they open up that second one out east, I don't think their location out there is going to last too long either. In fact, this may be the beginning of the End for City Market, which I understand is one the oldest Bahamian companies. Ah well, businesses fail and succeed all the time, those who are more savvy deserve to win.

Word is the Jew plans on closing them out, when he opens up his two new stores, one out east, to knock out the one out there, and one somewhere in the north to knock out the Harbour Bay location, and jews are real good at business, so I don't think CM going to survive this one, in fact SV, could even get a serious run for their money, I mean its all better for the consumer in lower prices and all, although kinda bad saying that CM has done a lot for Bahamians over the years, in regards to scholarships and stuff. Oh well, things change

...erm, a BA in computer science?? Does the BICA not have standards?

Am guessing your degree doesn't neccesarily have to be in accounting or finance to take the accounting exam, or get one of the qualifications.

Which is why I asked the question considering in other nations an accounting degree is a basic requirement or a master degree in business with an accounting concentration. But looking at the ACCA's website, apparently you don't need any college experience.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of this FCCA thing before today. But doing some research and found that most British universities will accept the ACCA/FCCA as a BA equivalent for the purposes of completing a master degree. However, as states regulate or have their own accountancy board, most American and Canadian territories do not offer reciprocity to FCCA holders as the educational requirements are insufficient (Canada and US require a master degree or equivalent to be an AICPA member). The BICA needs to improve standards.

Hi, I see you are looking down on the ACCA. This is not an easy program to complete. People have always said they would rather do the CPA. Trust me I know, I had to stop myself and people thought I was doing pretty well. I got my A@# handed to me on a platter.

I am not. The ACCA is internationally recognized, the CPA is not. These two are different animals. The responsibilities required of the typical CPA versus the typical ACCA is different. I have not looked at the ACCA but I do have a healthy knowledge of IFRS and the IASB and comparison to GAAP and FASB. The IASB will not convert to GAAP because conformity is far more stringent than IASB standards. Additionally, there are three bodies that dictate GAAP and OCBOA every year - so I understand the need to have a more "advanced" requirement of CPA holders. You are looking at the exams only, I am not.
