I totally agree a decent home for the elderly is a necessity. So many are simply 'discarded' . With this in mind -thread starter- remember Bahamians are NOT service orientated.

We would need like i said, trianed persons in this area. Andros can sustain this kind of development . I think the south part will do well its not that developed and they have good attitude doiwn there
first we need to try it on our own people, our own elderly .. they are the only ones we should really care about at this time .. yet they are treated like crap. We dont even have any real public transportation system for them to use, which BTW they have in Florida. Do we have any old age homes in the Bahamas? I think you will find the elderly dont like to just be stuck on a little island somewhere, also they dont like the heat much. If you are going to really try this, it has to be done up north like GB.

This is so true , charity begins at home and ends abroad.
I still believe that with the right persons this can be done . GB perhaps can get it on the move but i would hate to empower the port more than they are already. If it was done in the township it can fly.
I said in my prior postings that it would need the right blend of persons and personnel to make it work .
    just a thought

There are a handful of government run old folks home and maybe about half a dozen are private. The government ones have a long waiting list and the private ones can range any where from $800 per month.

And what condition are they in, do you mean like that so called old aged home on soldier road north? If so then I feel very sorry for those poor old folk, what a horrid way to spend ones last days.

That is why Tony is suggesting it be done in East End, GBI. The GBPA has little to no authority in the areas of far eastern Grand Bahama.

In fact many people are eyeing east Grand Bahama for development for just that reason.

Tony, if the Lord gave you this idea then perhaps he is intending for you to develop it.

Chile Sicky all I could say is if you have an elderly person and you can afford it, hire a qualified caregiver and allow the person to remain at home or in a comfortable environment amongst family member. Like everything else in this society, many of these institutions are not inspected.

    Re: Retirement village

Tony, was this the article you read that prompted this thread?

    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...to-retire.aspx

"The best place in the world to retire, according to expatriate lifestyle magazine International Living, is sunny, cheap, cosmopolitan and 8,000 feet high in the Andes.

Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city, is a well-preserved colonial city of cobblestone streets and dramatic period architecture, with modern suburbs, shopping and all the comforts American retirees might expect. Yet they can live there -- and well -- for about $17,000 a year, the magazine says. "

heck , for $17K a year, I might move there myself!
