    The Bahamas: one fat prostitute

The Bahamas: one fat prostitute making its way through the world unscrupulously selling its wares, its innocent self to the highest bidder in order to gain mere trinkets.

Clearly, it seems as if our country is being pimped out to the highest bidder by the powers that be to rich johns from around the world who are just looking for a quick fix, a cheap thrill at the expense of the Bahamian people.

Everyday, we see our culture and our ethics being cast aside in order to make a quick, yet small profit. Our basic self-expressions, our simplistic way of living are being curtailed and lambasted in order to entertain a foreign mass, an entity who does not appreciate nor care about what is truly Bahamain. They come here wielding a sweaty fist full of dollars charming us to spread ourselves open so that 'they can give us so called pleasure, so they can share their so called glorious essences with us, seed with us, so they can give us this so called much needed thrashing we need in order for us to become a better country, a better people.'

They gaze upon our voluptuous and bountiful beaches and claim it for themselves; telling us that they are perserving it for our own benefit, for our future. Yet they don't actually allow us to use it. Few people realize that one must pay a dollar to go beaching over PI. And that hotels throughout the Bahamas are now putting up barriers on their so called 'public beach' in order to protect their guests. Not to mention that there is a proliferation of gated communities that claim once popular off the beaten trail beaches and woodlands. It is clear that they are purchasing all the land for themselves, not us. So many acres of prime Bahamian land gone, no longer available nor affordable to the average Bahamian. We watch aimlessly as they make the down town areas a third choice for the tourist and we say nothing about it. We watch idlely as they change the landscape and the social culture of Cable Beach strip: to become a potential Sodem and Gamorrah. A refined middle class community changed into a las Vegas gambling strip. Clearly a foreign night life culture that is completely contrary to Bahamian living.

Subsequently, with the promises of more jobs and a thriving economy, they have us commit to heads of agreement which the majority of Bahamians are not interested in doing, moreso, not interested in having in our country. Objections from the vast majority of Bahamians regarding LNG have been ignored. Cries from residents on Guana Cay regarding that unwanted project are being silenced. When will it stop.

    I dunno.

I know I can't say much. But a part of me feels that if you don't appreciate and cherish what you have -- you will lose it.

I say let them have Nassau. Then take the money and build up Exuma, Andros, Inagua, and Abaco like we should've done in the first place. Nassau shouldn't matter that much. If everyone leaves then the property values drop and their investments go out the window. What will they do when the international airport is in Grand Bahama, the Central Bank is in Crooked Island, and the US embassy -- well, that'll probably stay in Nassau. The point being, life could be a whole lot easier and enriching if we learn to manage our resources.

Bahamians need to learn how to dance with the devil, especially when you have no choice.

The Foreign investors is smiling all the way to the bank. There is a saying that goes like this: if you have a horse ride it.

The most sad part of all of this land grab is the fact that the politicians is trying to convince us that they have our interest at heart. How can you have my interest at heart when the investor gets to sell and make a killing of our land without hardly any risk?

What is happening is that the investors are raising money by selling prime property and then they eventually throw in a semi hotel to appease the locals. Mere crumbs from our own damn land!

If one examine the recent heads of agreement sign by the goverment of late they are essentially condominums and gated communities. There is no real benefit to the economy in this kind of developement except a few mediocre jobs!

What do we expect? Most Bahamians only want jobs...that is their interests. Who cares about something like land.

You can have land and no vision......its called owning vacant land. It can also be called owning an incomplete building.

One would agree with you, except, these foreign investors are interested in purchasing and are purchasing the family islands too. In fact, they are buying whole islands and putting up their signs of no tresspassing. In fact, if they don't like you they demand that you leave their islands and go back to Nassau too. You can ask Leslie Miller about that one. Few persons can afford land on Harbour Island any more, a number of islands lack physical infastructure in order to go into small business. Moreover, due to so much generation lands in a number of family islands its getting difficult to purchase good prime land in the Bahamas. The land which you can purchase now, one has to wait until government run lines, cable, electricity, water pipes and roads, or pay the huge cost to put them in yourselves.

Maan, alls we got is land for sale .. want to buy some ...

also, lots of people selling their generation land also, as normally they dont have the $$ to do anything with it, so might as well give others the chance to do something usefull with it .. since the gov sellin everything else .

    This seems counter-intuitive.

If somebody is buying land, then somebody is being paid for that land.

What happened to the money that they were paid??

80 percent of the Bahamas' population lives on half of Nassau. Its seven by twenty-one miles. The land that isn't owned by the wealthy, churches, the government or businesses is probably uninhabitable. Which basically means we can probably pick from 8 or so other islands to squeeze 300,000 people on. Without running out of land to sell.

But that's another issue. It just doesn't make sense that people are selling all of the land and the money isn't going into *SOMETHING*. Whether its infrastructure for the other islands or some other capital project.

So if I were you...I think the issue would not be that they are selling land -- but that they are selling land and keeping the money.
